Problem in implementing custom_head for transfer learning

Hello
I’ve been trying to design a custom head for the pretrained ResNet 34 model for a 4-class image classification. This is the code for the head:

head = nn.Sequential(nn.AdaptiveAvgPool2d((1,1)),
                         Flatten(),
                         nn.Linear(1024, 512, bias=True),
                         nn.ReLU(inplace=True),
                         nn.Dropout(p=0.5),
                         nn.Linear(512, 128, bias=True),
                         nn.ReLU(inplace=True),
                         nn.Dropout(p=0.5),
                         nn.Linear(128, 4, bias=True)
                        )

And this is the code for the learner:

learn2 = cnn_learner(data, models.resnet34, pretrained=True, custom_head=head, metrics=[accuracy, Precision(average='macro'), Recall(average='macro'), FBeta(average='macro', beta=1.0)], wd=0.1)

This is the output of the learn2.model :

When I want to use lr_find or fit or fit_one_cycle, I get this error:
RuntimeError: size mismatch, m1: [128 x 512], m2: [1024 x 512] at /pytorch/aten/src/THC/generic/THCTensorMathBlas.cu:268

What am I doing wrong?

Try running it on CPU, the error message could be more useful.

Thanks for your reply. This is the error message when I run the code on CPU:

/usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/torch/nn/functional.py in linear(input, weight, bias)
   1404 if input.dim() == 2 and bias is not None:
   1405 # fused op is marginally faster
-> 1406         ret = torch.addmm(bias, input, weight.t())
   1407     else:
   1408         output = input.matmul(weight.t())

RuntimeError: size mismatch, m1: [128 x 512], m2: [1024 x 512] at /pytorch/aten/src/TH/generic/THTensorMath.cpp:961

Your first Linear layer: (2): Linear(in_features=1024, out_features=512, bias=True) takes 1024 activations as input, but resnet34 provides 512 channels output. Hence, you got to modify your head so that in_features=512 for your first linear layer.

If you are curious, you can use Hooks as a debugging tool to view input and outputs. Below is a sample code to see input and output of the adaptive pooling layer (just before the linear layers) for the default resnet architecture.

from fastai.vision import *

m = models.resnet34()

def print_shape(self, inp, out):
    print(inp[0].shape, out[0].shape)

h = m.avgpool.register_forward_hook(print_shape)

o = m(torch.randn(1, 3, 224, 224))
h.remove()

Output:

torch.Size([1, 512, 7, 7]) torch.Size([512, 1, 1])
