How has your journey been so far, learners?

Hello everyone,
I’m out of Toronto, Canada. I have a background in software engineering and ML from college and some experience in data munging and analytics application from work in trading. Its exciting to be part of a course with so many motivated and in the forums already - looking forward to a practical, top down, collaborative, applicable program!
I’m looking forward to getting a good foundation with DL tools over the two parts of the course, then excited to dig into Deep RL and evolutionary applications.

I own a small (mom-pop type) liquor store in Austin TX! And am looking to build some AI/ML products for small time retail stores. Would love to find collaborators who may be interested in that space.

Background: Have built and sold a small Software Dev Services company. Originally from India and went to school at IIT Delhi and Univ of Wisconsin-Madison. Maybe the oldest person in the class? (almost 54)

That’s a really interesting-sounding journey @sanjeev.b! What kinds of things do you think would help in the small retail space?

Hi! I am at UW Madison now!

Hello Everyone,

I am a UI developer, capable of handling the web front-end development from design to deployment. I have been working on ML for past 2 years. Without proper guidance, all my learning went through a different set of things like Math, Algorithms and so many things (Except coding). Just like Jeremy said I learned how to make a bat to play baseball instead of start playing it.
I already went through v1 of this course, It’s an eye-opener for me. In this v2 I like to be part of the live session to understand more of the basics like how to evaluate the data-set and choosing right parameters for the different part of the architecture.

Like to know more about me below is the link.

Nice analogy! Where are you based, BTW?

I am from TN, India. Currently from CO, USA. Yeah, after v1 (part 1 and part 2) all I do is to start looking into the code instead of reading the equation behind it. Thanks for the session!

Hello fellows!

I am Shubham. I am based out of a small town, Gwalior, India. I studied Chemical Engineering in college. But, I decided to move to data science and machine learning. Until recently, I was a fellow at Data Science for Social Good fellowship program. I worked on the identifying illegal fishing vessels in the Torres Strait. Before that, I’ve worked at early-stage startups and research labs in universities.

Excited for the class!

Here are some ideas I have been exploring:

  • Current security systems (the $500-$900 system you can buy at costco) are very dumb. They simply record video. Lots of intelligence can be added here if the systems understood some context and interpreted video.

  • For a non-owner run store like ours having employees that you can trust is critical. So theft monitoring/control is a huge area. (We had a big problem in this area)

  • Physical inventory taking is a pain - even for our small store it takes us 4-5 people almost a full day to do that. Ideally I would love to walk through the store, record video and let it identify and count bottles. (Did dig deep into it and its a tough problem)

  • Even things like analytics on how many people walk into store, how many leave without purchasing could improved.

Hi,

I have been working on Teradata database. Earlier to this was a .net developer. It’s been two months have started exploring AI, ML and DL. Just challenging myself to contribute to this world.

Hey Cory,

I live on Vancouver Island as well… plus I buy your amazing cheese from the markets each week. Tomme is our favorite but we have La Mancha this week. Very small fast.ai world.

Hi All,

I am working in Data Science from past 6 months. Earlier I was working with DW/BI. I am here to get started with Deep Learning. I would like to collaborate with other fellows and work on interesting/challenging problems.

Hi everyone, I’m from Buenos Aires, Argentina, there I’ve worked for about 3 years as a data scientist in a startup, but I decided that I wanted to travel and gain a deeper knowledge about this area so now I’m travelling and learning.
For the moment I’m in Tokyo, Japan. Thanks @jeremy for this incredible resource!

My background is in hardware design specifically how to build energy efficient floating point units for throughput machines i.e. GPU. It is quite an exciting time for AI and hardware and I am looking forward to learning a lot about the field. Also I am interested in applying AI methods to speech in the context of Egyptian Arabic which is my native language. Egyptian Arabic is interesting as it is widely spoken but is not written neither used formally, so AI can be of great help in providing understanding and structure to that.

I’m an Adjunct Research Professor (Computer Science) in Ottawa, Canada. My main research is in the field of computer communications and networking. Part of my research is on applied data science to network management and I see huge opportunities for applied DNN, from basic architectures to CNN, RNN, GANs, etc. I like to do the coding part of my research with my PhD students  I have a good backgroung and hands-on experience with both Statistics and Machine Learning.

I might leave academia soon for an endeavor with the industry. I took this year off of my academic duties.

I have been into Machine Learning and Recommendation Systems since 2010. I am looking to make my Deep Learning skills solid with this class as I find less opportunities at my current workplace to implement any AI.

Hello Folks, I am Pawan from India, doing Data Science, mostly statistical model building, from last 4-5 years mostly in Airline and Retail space. Currently, applying ML in retail space and trying to solve problems like - how will a new product do in future and how will it sales/ demand look like. I am interested in applying ML, DL in healthcare mostly in analysis of image data so as to reduce the cost of diagnosis in India. I hold two patents on application of ML in Retail space.

Hope to learn DL and start applying it!

Hi All,

I have been working on deep learning for the past couple of months, mostly in deep reinforcement learning. I have recently found an interest in language translation models. There are hundreds of dialects and scripts which will long be forgotten for lack of people using them, these languages, I feel, can be saved/archived through machine translation.

Reasons for my interest in RL is mainly because, it gives an option to apply some of the recent advancement in ML without the need/availability of google/baidu sized data, but by generating data through millions of iterations and in way, it’s always interesting to see how an agent optimizes for a given objective function in RL. I have used traditional machine learning for data analysis and modelling while being a research assistant at an energy research institute during my graduate studies.

Thanks,
Rahul
