Class Activation Mapping on ConvLearner

I’m trying to apply the CAM functionality from Lesson 7 on a ConvLearner model, but I’ve run into some problems.

Firstly how do I know what layer to extract? In lesson 7 we added a Conv2d layer near the end of the model. When I make a learner with ConvLearner, it has the following structure:

Sequential(
  (0): Conv2d(3, 64, kernel_size=(7, 7), stride=(2, 2), padding=(3, 3), bias=False)
  (1): BatchNorm2d(64, eps=1e-05, momentum=0.1, affine=True)
  (2): ReLU(inplace)
  (3): MaxPool2d(kernel_size=(3, 3), stride=(2, 2), padding=(1, 1), dilation=(1, 1), ceil_mode=False)
  (4): Sequential(
    (0): BasicBlock(
      (conv1): Conv2d(64, 64, kernel_size=(3, 3), stride=(1, 1), padding=(1, 1), bias=False)
      (bn1): BatchNorm2d(64, eps=1e-05, momentum=0.1, affine=True)
      (relu): ReLU(inplace)
      (conv2): Conv2d(64, 64, kernel_size=(3, 3), stride=(1, 1), padding=(1, 1), bias=False)
      (bn2): BatchNorm2d(64, eps=1e-05, momentum=0.1, affine=True)
    )

The most recent conv layer is buried in a basic block. Which layer do I want to extract?

The other concept I’m not grasping is what a hook is and how it works. I have been going in circles trying to get SaveFeatures / register_forward_hook to output anything. Everything I do results in None or an empty list. Can someone help me understand what a hook is, how we extract it, and why we need this hook to do class activation modeling?

I also don’t understand the dimensions of the tensor we extract from the hook. In lesson 7 we use layer m[-4], which we defined as

Conv2d(512, 2, kernel_size=(3, 3), stride=(1, 1), padding=(1, 1))

To get

torch.Size([1, 2, 7, 7])

What is the relationship?

Any help understanding this stuff would be appreciated.
